Kids Flexible Eyeglass Frames

Hi, I know that this question has come up before but, I wonder if it was on the old board format.

My DS is going to be 4 and we anticipate him being told at his eye exam on Monday that he needs glasses. We see Dr. Maria Patterson. I've seen other young children with eyeglasses that are flexible and look like plastic or rubber, not see through material. The lenses are round. Can you tell me who makes these lenses? I've tried googling them and can't find them. I'm wondering about how much I should be expecting to pay for these glasses and want to get him something that will be sturdy.

Thank you!

  1. I think you might be talking about Miraflex glasses. ??? Dr. Patterson would be able to give you this information, she's great.

  2. We also used Dr Patterson and she gave us a sheet of places she recommended on where to purchase children's glasses. I didn't want to just go anywhere and she said the people on the sheet work well with kids. My son is 4 and also wears the Miraflex glasses. We use Optical Consultants on Silvernail Rd. in Pewaukee/Waukesha. They were $100 for the frames and $200 for the lenses. We got the scratch resistant and other things for the lens so that added to the cost. My son is not crazy about the band on the back of his head with the Miraflex glasses. You have to wear them with the band and we didn't know this when we got them. You also have to fold them up and put this other band they provide around them so they aren't stretching out all the time. We do this nightly. But both my husband and I have accidentally sat on this and he takes them off/on all the time and they are still wearing great. So they are a great first pair of glasses. I think the next stop up to something 'durable' is one by Fisher Price but they can still break, I think. Good luck!

  3. My daughter also sees Dr. Patterson and is 3.5. She has had glasses for just over a year and I debated about going with the miraflex, the wrap around glasses, or ones that just have a cable hinge that goes behind the ear. I was very happy that we went with ones that just hook around the ear. I think if she would have been younger I would have considered the miraflex ones more but now that we are going to be getting her a new pair we will get a regular plastic or metal frame. We also went through Optical Consultants the first time but looking for something a little cheaper this time. These are the ones we purchased for the first glasses and couldn't have been happier.

  4. I'm not sure about kids' glasses, but if you have the prescription you can go to zennioptical.com and they have an amazing selection, very cheap! I just got a pair for myself that are hinge free and they seem sturdy, but for a 4 year old, maybe not.
