Moving to Milwaukee in July 2012

Hi everyone,

my family and I (husband, 2 year old son, and dog) will be moving to the city of Milwaukee at the end of this month. We're currently living in the state of Oregon, and so we're researching the city as much as possible from afar.

We'll be living IN the city, since that's a requirement of my husband's future employer. I've come across many suggestions for family-friendly and dog-friendly communities outside of the city limits, but want suggestions from moms regarding safe, family-friendly communities WITHIN the city.

As for me, I'm currently a SAHM and am eventually hoping to return to work part-time but only after my 2 year old makes the transition. Despite my Washington, DC upbringing, I must share that the population of Milwaukee feels very daunting at the moment, since I know no one there and we've been living in a very small town (pop. 10,000) these last three years. Therefore, I'd love to find a neighborhood that feels more like a small community. Not leaning towards one ethnic community or another -- just want to know what other moms feel good about. :)

Suggestions? Any ideas are welcome!

My best,
Jobey

  1. I'm a mom to a 2 year old so I understand where you are coming from. I'm also not from Milwaukee originally so I understand how daunting it can be to move here. Do you plan to buy or rent?

Milwaukee has a lot of great family friendly areas within the city! Do you know if you would prefer downtown, the north or south side of Milwaukee? If your looking toward the south, Jackson Park is a very popular area (http://jacksonpark.us/). On the north a lot of people are drawn to Enderis Park (http://www.enderis.com/), which is on the border of Milwaukee and Wauwatosa. Mount Mary is another popular area. If you want to be closer to downtown Milwaukee the East Side may be your best bet. It is very walkable and there are lots of great pockets of family friendly neighborhoods. You may want to check out walkscore.com to get a better idea of different areas throughout Milwaukee.

Of course, all this depends on your plans for schools. Do you know where you want to send your son?

I hope this is helpful! Let me know if I can answer any other questions (private message is best since I don't check this site all the time) and good luck with your move!

  2. We live in Bay View, a neighborhood on the south side (53207), and we love it! If your husband or you are working downtown, it's a 5 minute commute, which we love.
It's also a really safe, tight-knit, family-friendly neighborhood. If you're looking on maps, the best areas of the larger Bay View area are east of Kinnickinnic (KK) St. to the Lake and also around Humboldt Park on the west side of KK.
Re the msg above, I've never heard much good about Jackson or Enderis park. Also, schools-wise- it is important to think about, but you may also end up in a magnet or Montessori (public) that pulls from all over the city, so where you live is not as crucial.
Let me know (PM) if you have questions! We moved here 5 years ago so I know how it is!

  3. Bay View is a neat neighborhood, I agree! Also has a handful of good schools to choose from when that time comes. Story Hill is also a rockin neighborhood, which is right by Miller Park. Hawley School and Woodlands School are in the neighborhood, which both have good reps. My hubby was working quite a bit north of the city when we were house hunting so it was out of the question for us to go as far south as Bay View and there wasn't a whole lot on the market in Story Hill at the time, but the market has really changed since then.

We live on the extreme northwest side of the city, almost in Brown Deer, but within city limits so there are a lot of police officers, teachers and firefighters in our neighborhood. The yards are big, everyone waves and talks to each other, it's racially diverse, which we feel is important. Overall, we're happy here :) Unfortunately the only good (I mean FABULOUS) school I can say is on this side of town is Milwaukee German Immersion School if you go the public school route, which is where we send our son. It is an incredible place, but if we didn't get him in there we were going to do the 20 min. trek down to Hawley and back every day, there just aren't any other good public schools on this end of town. Wisconsin has open enrollment so you really have a lot of options when it comes to schools.

  4. Hi!

Good luck with your move to Milwaukee! I moved to WI 6 years ago, so I understand. I live in Bay View too (zip: 53207) and love it. I am expecting my first baby this November. If you have any specific questions, feel free to contact me!

    Take care!

  6. Thank you SO VERY MUCH, everyone! Your feedback and suggestions have been tremendously helpful. We are now here in Milwaukee and have found everyone in this city to be exceptionally friendly, despite the heat wave! We arrived last week and have found a great bungalow to rent in the Washington Heights neighborhood. I like that it's a beautiful and safe neighborhood and very near my husband's new job on Vliet Avenue.

I'm still curious about Bay View and perhaps we'll consider buying a home in that area in a year or two. I want to get my feet on the ground first and get the lay of the land.

I'll be a stay at home mom for the next two months or so and then will begin a job search for part-time work with one of the universities. I'd now like to begin the search for daycare programs (both licensed in-home care and licensed organizations) near the west side of town. Our son's previous day care in the state of Oregon was with a fabulous woman who had run an in-home program for years. So, I'm not averse to the idea.

He'll be two years old in August and I'd like him to be with a racially diverse group of kids. He really seemed to enjoy being with a range of ages too -- infants and 3 and 4 year olds. What are your suggestions? Any places you don't recommend? Thank you!

    My best,
    Jobey

  7. Hello,

I don't live too far from you. I work PT & my kids are in daycare downtown at Guardian Angel Learning Center. Excellent center & racially diverse. We have had all positive experiences there. My friend also works PT & sends her kids to Pilgrim Lutheran, near 70th & Center St. (west side/Wauwatosa). She speaks highly of the facility.

If you have any interest in a play date at a local park to get to know others, let me know. I have a 3 1/2 y.o., 2 y.o. (just turned 2 in June), & 7 month old. So, one of my children is similar in age to your son! I don't check this site too often, so a private msg is the best way to reach me.

    Best of luck in Milwaukee!

  8. We were very happy with Wauwatosa Day Care and Learning Center on 92nd & Capital. It really prepared him for school and it is racially and economically diverse and there were a couple of kids with special needs as well - an overall diverse experience :) But the kids are grouped according to age as they are in most day care centers. If you want your child to spend the day with kids of various ages you might want to do the in-home route. Glad you're settling into the city!
