Grass-fed beef?

Hi,
Does anyone purchase grass-fed beef directly from a farmer in bulk? I'm interesting in finding someone to purchase from relatively close to the Milwaukee area. Please let me know if you've had any good experiences and know if "your" farmer is still taking orders.
Thank you!!

  1. This might not be what you're looking for, but what about Sendik's? They sell the Tallgrass brand beef, which is grassfed. More expensive than the regular stuff obviously.

  2. I've got a farmer for you. It's Ruegsegger Farms, website at http://www.naturalmeats.org . We've had really good grass fed beef, buffalo and ostrich from them. As well as eggs and cheeses. They deliver to the Milwaukee Public Market at least once a month and sometimes if they have a lot of orders in one area, they deliver to a house in your area.

They are at several of the area farmer's markets in the summertime, and you can also buy in bulk. Very tasty. :)

DO you just order from them and pick up, or do they deliver? (I mean other than buying at the farmer's markets) Their prices are so good, they seem unreal. Am I missing some kind of "fee?" or something?

I am reading a book called "Eating Animals." Ugh. I have tried to repress what I read about factory farming 15 years ago. At the time I bought meat at Outpost. Then we got to a point where I couldn't afford it. Now reading this book, all the horror is coming back. I don't know that I can continue to participate in that system. But I know from experience I am NOT vegetarian material lol.

  5. If you order a large quantity (ie quarter, half, etc) they do deliver it right to your house! When you order in bulk, you pay per pound on the rail weight (so that includes all the bones, fat, etc that gets removed as they turn it into cuts of meat), but after processing you end up with roughly 35% less in packages of meat. Buying in bulk does mean shelling out several hundred dollars at once, but the upside is that you have a freezer full of meat.
