Looking for winter activities for a 1 1/2 year old

I am looking for some indoor activities/places that I can take my son during the winter months. He is 16 months and most of the play places that I have found are geared more towards older toddlers and up. My son is 16 months - I would love to get him out of the house to play and learn, but am not sure where. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

  1. Many libraries in the area hold lapsit programs for babies. At the West Allis Public Library our lapsit program for children ages 9-months to 23-months will be held on Mondays, February 6, 13, and 20 at 9:30am. The program lasts 20-minutes with an additional 10-minutes of playtime or reading with the caretaker. The program is free to Milwaukee County residents.

  2. Betty Brinn has a really nice toddler area. It might be an idea to get a year pass if you're going to go often; it can really add up.

conversely, why not try a Gymboree class (or similar - many park districts offer classes like that too). Again, it can get costly but we took our oldest to Gymboree for awhile. She really liked it. And they have classes for kids of all ages.

  3. The JCC at Bayshore (near the play area and food court) has a free activity time M-W-F from 11-12. There are a variety of activities and my 19-month old son always finds something to do. Discovery World (aquarium, replica sailing ship) is also a great place for little ones to run off energy. The Domes are free to Milwaukee Country residents on Mondays and there are always lots of kids there checking things out. Right now they have a really neat train exhibit. The public museum is also free on Mondays and my little one likes the butterflies and streets of old Milwaukee exhibits. We're also part of a play group that meets T-Th and has a ton of activites for kids of all ages. Feel free to private message me for more info.

  4. I'm not sure what side of town you are on, but the Cudahy Family Library also has storytimes for your son's age group. They currently meet every Tuesday 10:15 & 11:00, Wednesday 10:15, and Thursday 10:15 & 11:00 through the end of January (the schedule will change in February so you'll want to check the website www.cudahyfamilylibrary.org). It's free, there's no registration, and it's open to everyone. There's also a really big cooperative play area so even if you don't make the storytime there are usually lots of parents hanging out while their kids play with all of the toys.

The Family Tree Haus and Big Backyard both have seperate play areas for younger kids which might work as well..Family Tree Haus is definitely more low-key with less chance of the little ones getting run over. The Bay View Community Center offers weekly open play sessions for only $1. It's a really nice facility with LOTS of toys. I think they offer it twice each week.

    Happy playing! :)

  5. Come check out The Children's Play Gallery in Delafield (www.thechildrensplaygallery.com). The Play Gallery is a children's museum dedicated to the education and development of young children through hands-on, creative and interactive play. Your son will love climbing on our big pirate ship!
