Description:
Organic Apple Orchard set to open in the Town of Erin Peck and Bushel Fruit Company announces its inaugural year of organic apple production. Beginning in late August, the orchard will have availability of its early apple varieties. The orchard has nearly 4,000 dwarf apple trees. “These smaller trees make it easier for everyone to pick apples without the need for a ladder. Peck and Bushel; Bushel uses a trellis system to grow fruit, much like a vineyard. This system gives the trees support as they produce apples,” says Joe Fahey, owner and orchardist at the farm. As the trees are still very new, Peck and Bushel will only have pre-picked apples for 2011. The orchard hopes to have "Pick Your Own" apples available for 2012. Organic Methods The idea of Peck and Bushel Fruit Company started with an interest in growing great varieties of apples in a new way. “We chose to use natural, organic methods of fruit production to ensure a healthy eating experience,” Joe explains. “We do not use any synthetic chemicals or fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides or genetically modified products. We do plant flowers and shrubs that attract native pollinators to enhance the natural apple tree.” Although all of the fruit is environmentally safe, they still suggest you wash all fruit thoroughly before eating. You will taste the difference in their organic apples. The Orchard The orchard is located in the Town of Erin. This area is known for its natural beauty, views of Holy Hill and that “farm country” feel. This is the perfect location to grow local, Wisconsin apples. This area is known for its Monches artisans, tourists at Holy Hill Basilica and world-class golfers at Erin Hills. The area also now boasts the largest organic apple orchard in Southeastern Wisconsin. Come to the Orchard The orchard is located in the Town of Erin on County Road Q (at the Washington/Waukesha County line) three miles west of Hwy 164 and 10 miles west of the intersection of Hwy 41/45 at County Road Q. They will have a pre-picked fruit stand at its County Road Q entrance, as fruit is available. Tours of the orchard will occur on weekends during late August through October. The orchard is a great place to spend time with family and friends, enjoy splendid grounds with farm country vistas and take home some healthy Wisconsin-grown apples.
