The Gay Husband Phenomenon

There’s an odd little trend out there among celebrities and wealthy women. Apparently, it’s very chic to have a “gay husband.” And no, I do not mean being married to someone who is gay. Rather, a gay husband is when a married woman has a man friend who happens to be gay.

I first noticed this on The Real Housewives of New York City. Jill Zarin often talked about her “gay husband,” Brad. Brad was also Jill’s work colleague but she was happy to have him around for shopping trips, interior design advice or when her husband Bobby had no interest in attending an event. Brad was quirky and brutally honest and he and Jill bickered like an old married couple.

Recently, I caught a snippet of “Tori & Dean – Home Sweet Hollywood,” starring Tori Spelling. Like Jill Zarin, Tori has a “gay husband,” Mehran, who is also her best friend. Mehran is there for Tori when her hubby Dean is off riding motorcycles, deep sea diving or various other manly pursuits.

Honestly, I’m not sure what to think of the concept of a “gay husband.” It’s certainly not threatening to the husband although I'm not sure it's great for the marriage. I guess what bugs me about it is that it seems to reduce the “gay husband” to merely an accessory. Wouldn't it be nicer to just call him a friend?
